I think one can make the argument that being a self-directed trader or investor in 2026 is perhaps the greatest time ever, and I mean ever, to be just that. There has literally never been a better time to be a do-it-yourself investor or trader.
Say what you will about market access in the 2000s, the E*TRADE baby, Bloomberg Terminal killers, and the rise of mobile trading. Yet still, based on what I’m seeing, nothing compares to what the retail trader now has with a $20 monthly plan to Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or any of the other frontier AI platforms.
AI Is The Sidekick I Wish I had When I Got Started Trading
What makes AI so fascinating to me in this new era is not that it’s another research product or data tool, but actually that it is the investment partner, a colleague, the “Charlie Munger to your Warren Buffett” that was always challenging to find. Here’s what I mean by that:
1. You start a chat on an AI platform about a trade or investment you’re working on.
2. Rather than just looking at more data, you have a detailed back and forth about the trade, its risk, the industry, different strategies, and planning techniques.
3. So, before, the process looked like this: I found a cool company -> I looked at its website and financials -> I bought it.
But now it becomes: I found a stock -> I asked AI about it -> I asked it to present to me a full analysis of the company like they’re an investment banking analyst -> I asked it to review my trade like they’re a pro risk manager -> I held off on buying right away and instead devised a long-term plan.
This workflow was essentially entirely impossible just 24 months ago unless you had an awesome friend a la Charlie Munger to Warren Buffett, hired consultants, or had access to a team that just wanted to help.
Why AI Unlocks More Value Than Prior Retail Trading Breakthroughs
Flash back 20 or 25 years. Someone got a hot stock pick on the train, ran home, logged into their brokerage, and bought it. No research, no thesis, no risk plan. The DotCom bubble was booming and this level of online trading was just having its breakthrough.
Then, after the financial crisis, it happened again: the mobile trading experience entered the scene. These moments were considered the premier times to be involved in retail investing or trading. However, in my view, those were just warm-up to get us to where we are now.
Let’s revisit the way traders and investors of all skill levels can approach markets with AI by their side: You hear a stock pick or an idea, you watch something trend, break out, or make the news, and in less than 60 seconds you start a pro-investor-level conversation happening for less than a cup of coffee: “Why am I crazy for buying this right now? Tell me more about this company. What does it actually do? Am I over levered based on these other positions?”
We’re Still in Inning One or Two
If you really think about it, we are still in inning one or two of this shift. The era of placing a trade or making an investment based on a single chart, a single tweet, or a single gut feeling is genuinely on the cusp of being over. Yes, it will still happen. Yes, it will never go away because that’s just how things go. But with this new toolset, more people will begin to realize that everything is changing.
Why would you ever click buy again without first running the idea through an AI product? Type out the thesis. Paste a screenshot of the chart. Ask for a full DCF analysis. The cost is almost nothing to unlock this workflow. The downside is near zero. The upside is years of mistakes you simply do not have to make anymore.
Not Different, Just Simply Phenomenal
I am not going to say “this time is different,” because we all know how that line usually ends. But I will say this: this time is phenomenal. The tools available to the self-directed trader or investor in 2026 are not an incremental upgrade.
They are an entirely new category that has never once been possible.
