Value Stocks Are Moving While Markets Tank

As I type, the Nasdaq-100 has just experienced one of its fastest seven-day corrections in the last 12 months. It’s also now in the red on a year-to-date basis. My social feeds are filled with panic, especially my friends who are just getting into trading. NVIDIA is down again after earnings. But in markets, something is always moving beneath the surface, often unnoticed by the crowd.

Let me explain…

When was the last time you checked in on pure value plays? If you’re like most, it’s probably been a while. While the Nasdaq-100 has dropped nearly 2% since the start of the year, the Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) is up 4.5%. In a world where high-flying growth stocks dominate headlines, old-fashioned value investing is quietly making a comeback.

Check this out:

For those unfamiliar with value investing, it’s a discipline that prioritizes strong cash flows, profitability, and balance sheet strength over revenue growth and great potential. Warren Buffett is the quintessential value investor and has spent a lifetime mastering this art, sharing it with the world. His approach? Back to the basics—discounted cash flow models, sustainable earnings, and the ultimate question: Is your lemonade stand actually profitable?

As Buffett himself puts it:

1. “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.”

2. “The stock market is designed to transfer money from the Active to the Patient.”

With upcoming tax cuts and a more business-friendly environment on the horizon, disciplined investors have an opportunity to thrive again in this field. Value stocks may be able to go on the offensive. Those who ignored value stocks in favor of speculative plays have been doing so for years. Is it finally changing?

If history is any guide, now might be the time to revisit the playbook of the greats. Buffett, Munger, Graham—they built their fortunes not by chasing momentum, but by owning durable businesses at reasonable prices. The market may be wobbling, but for the prudent investor, it’s simply another chance to for the timeless power of cash flow.
